Iranian President Raisi and other top officials have been killed in a helicopter crash
The helicopter carrying the president and other officials crashed in a mountainous area of southeastern Iran
Raisi was in the southeastern province of Kerman to visit victims of the recent earthquake when the helicopter carrying him along with Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and other officials crashed.
The cause of the crash is not yet known, but Iranian officials are investigating.
If confirmed, this would be a major blow to the Iranian government, which is already facing economic sanctions and international pressure.
Raisi, a hardline cleric, was elected president in 2021. He is a close ally of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Amir-Abdollahian, the foreign minister, is a veteran diplomat who has served in various roles in the Iranian government.
The other officials killed in the crash have not yet been identified.
